Important Tips on Driving Work on smoothness, consistency and speed in that order. Keep your eyes moving constantly, down the road, up close, but always where you are going, not what is behind you. Find landmarks such as a pylon, a line on the track, a hay bale, a grease spot, anything that is clearly visible and can be used as a reference point to help you make braking points, turn in points, apex/release points and acceleration points. Sometimes, relying on depth perception only is not enough, and reference points can definitely improve consistency. Walk the track where you are. Note slopes, off camber sections, bumps. anything that might give you an edge. Always look for where the most grip is. Differentiate the terms apex and release point. An apex is where you initially get close (touch) a curb at your tightest point in most given turns. The release point is where you start to unwind the steering wheel, or straighten wheel, or straighten out the kart. The line around a turn can have an apex that is 2 feet in distance or 50 feet in distance, or more. What really matters is the release point, because that is what sets you up for the next section, and the goal in performance driving is maximizing the exit of any given turn. Draw a map of the track, and identify which turns have priority in terms of lap times, and which have priority in terms of race strategy. Generally, the turn leading on to the longest straight is the most important for lap time and race strategy. You have to be fast at the finish line, as well as the passing zone. For outright speed on the clock, look at the high speed turns for more performance. Always start each sessions slowly, and end with a cool down. Rarely do you see professional drivers crashing because of cold tires. Take a warm up lap. Compiled by: Rosedi
